Jeep Trip to Keanakolu
The
next historical jeep tour will go around the base of Mauna
Kea on Mana Road. This is an all-day, beautiful, four-wheel
drive trip which passes through lush koa forest and various
ranch lands including Parker, Pu'u O'o, and Pu'u 'Akala, and
ending up in Waimea. The trip begins with a talk at th historic
Humu'ula sheep station, travels around the northeast side
of the mountain to Kaluakauka (doctor's pit), the site of
Dr. David Douglas' (famous botanist and name sake to the Douglas
Fir tree) mysterious death in 1834. We will provide you with
the background on this unusual site and the opportunity for
an optional 20-minute hike down to the commemorative stone
where Douglas lost his life, and where you can learn the story
of his demise. The trip continues thorugh an old koa forest

a rustic koa cagin, ca. 1875, set amidst an old orchard.
