Meet Charlie, a 25-year-old donkey that lives at Kona Historical Society’s Kona Coffee Living History Farm. For more than a decade, Charlie has helped tell the story of the Kona nightingales, donkeys that got their name because they brayed to each other from one coffee farm to another at sunset. Donkeys like Charlie were an important part of the Kona coffee industry on Hawaii Island. Kona Historical Society, a nonprofit, wants to get Charlie a friend so he won’t be so lonely, but needs to improve the farm’s pasture first.
