School Programs

A special living history program is available for students and class groups at the Kona Coffee Living History Farm. Hands on activities include hand washing clothes, game playing, picking coffee, and grinding coffee. Small groups of 10-15 are guided through the farm and farmhouse to approx. 10 stations; the visit ends with traditional games of the coffee land played on the lawn.

Our Kalukalu site and the historic H.N. Greenwell Store provide a unique and authentic setting for your students to learn about native plants, how Hawai`i became involved in world-wide commerce, how artifacts can give us clues to understanding the past, and other related subjects. The students may visit various "stations" on the site where trained interpreters in period clothing will give a lesson about a particular topic of Hawai`i's history. The lower pasture makes a wonderful venue for lunch, and you may choose to visit on a day when we are baking bread in our Portuguese stone oven.

I want to make a trip to the farm a part of my curriculum and allow more time for us to savor the experience…the Kona Historical Society and the D. Uchida Farm are valuable community resources." ~ Teacher at Honaunau School.

We also offer our Toranku, or trunk show, as an outreach program for Kona schools. Costumed interpreters visit classes with a trunk full of artifacts and reproductions that illustrate the presentation about coffee history and Kona's pioneers in the industry. Traditional coffee land games are played and children are invited to handle artifacts and talk story with the interpreters.

Our 75 minute Kailua Village Walking Tour will take the students back in time, to the days of the ancient Hawaiian chiefs, who loved this area for its calm seas and good fishing. There is much to see and learn in this very historic area.
